The Heartland 50

A little late by a week but here goes. The heartland 50 one more time just as fun and as grueling as always. Race starting line with me and what I thought who would be the rest of the back of the Packers except for one. A 6pm race start is one of the mental things to deal with along with what was to be 50 degrees turn to be 43.

After 4-50’s, 2-100k’s and 2-100 miles I have learned a lot. Most of that you really cannot express in words you have to go though it to learn things and more about yourself. Mostly to push those limits you never thought possible before.
Everyone has a reason that there out there they may tell you that they don’t but they do. Mine well let’s just you can’t get redemption / forgiveness from a race. And luck I don’t belive in luck except for when I say a few people just didn’t get lucky as I didn’t make that other white line in the race again.

Two of us in our group that we met were newbies and wanted to know how to run a 50. Probably the wrong answer but what’s to think about it’s only a 50. Just walk up the hills and run down the hills and flats.

It got a little cool and thank God I had one of there husband’s take my jacket to the 16 mile aid station. It went fairly smooth to 25 miles. Though one of the women took off with one of the guys that ran oodles of 50k’s and was bombing on mile 22. Gave her my S-caps had her take one and one when would get to the next aid. Told her do not quit because it will pass. She did not eat and would only drink and was her down fall. I told her husband what to do and skoot her back out and let her drop at 16 left if she still wanted to, but he let her go and do it anyway.

It went great and when another that caught up and we pushed each other. Another 50 under the belt in 10:54 and 1 more shiny SMO for the back of the closet in a grocery bag. Anything over 14hrs that thing goes in the ditch the 1st time that happens as the race was originally a 14hr race not 18. Crisis averted and beer to celebrate another finish. The first and only goal of the day beyond the 2nd.

“We have more power than will; and it is often by way of excuse to ourselves that we think things are impossible.” – Francois Duc De la Rochefoucauld

This is so true as last Saturday I seen at my race a man ready to run jog walk by whatever means to get to the finish line of a 50 mile ultra. That day was not the best in the world for a race it had poured rain 3 times that day and at the 6pm it had been in the middle of it again with dirt roads getting muddy the day progressed . Stuck with him in the pump room out of the rain I had to ask ” How the he’ll old are you? ” and his answer amazed me. I and others only hope to be at it like him when we are that old others had said at the start line and during the race. He told me a little about himself in life and running. His son ran also but we’re just marathons though his family never crewed for him which made me think that I had it to easy as I had someone crewing for me at almost half his age. He said he’d just finished a 50 mile trail ultra last month and had to go for it again. I was told he used to run 100’s still with no crew but hadn’t done one since he was 72 because he couldn’t finish them anymore. He said these races are not just to place, but to finish as it is an accomplishment for anyone to do so. And I am wondering weather I’ll still be able to finish them next year. As we took off for the start of the race in the rain I didn’t see him again till my mile 28 and his mile 22 and plugging right along. I am always in amazement of these guys as I had seen a 70 year old and two 77 year Olds running that same race previous years. For those that have done those really don’t believe in luck any more as they know it is power, will, determination and the choices you make with a little bit of chance that are what get and put you where you are today. How old you ask did he say, we’ll it was 80 with no signs of sitting down and letting life go by. Awesome!!

Aug 19 – Sept 2 Some good training finally happening that I’m happy with….

Ater that bum week of lagging runs I got it together or maybe the body coming out of a forced recoupe week don’t know but these two weeks have been great. Soreness gone pretty much. Even after that real marathon training run on my own where running through that town again we just made it to for the books i got some really weird looks. Wanderimg were in the hec did he come from. Because it is one of those towns small enough every one knows who lives there and who dosn’t or better put who belongs.

This last week and some days were still up to speed to I am thinking it is that I backed off on the crossfit and added another two exercises instead to the 10 rounds of the first teo miles of the 10 miler.

I will see how it goes after this weekend I have a marathon training run on Saterday and a 15k race the wife wants me to do for free tickets ro this private zoo on Sunday should be cool saterday so as I’m thinking so I have a good chance to be ready to go for it if Iget done early Saterday.

After the supposed best run I ever had….

After what was one of my best runs that was not. Yes it was not what I thought it was it was not a marathon and had only been a 21 mile run from town to town. Although we did get one more town run to in the books it was also a big let down the next dat after looking it up on map my run and finding it wasn’t

Aug 1 – Aug 12 Holy S Batman could it be!!

Well beat me senseless and call me something, but all these days not getting out but 2/3’s of the time and cutting the cross fit in half to 10 stops of 30- crunches 20- push-ups and 10 burpee’s in the 1st 2 miles of the 10 to 13 mile run must be it. The last few days of the Kansas July and the 1st 2 weeks of August were hot and people just thought I was crazy being outside anyway. But doing the cross fit and the 10 to 13 miles on top of it, they just looked at me funny. Though running around that lake was good stress relief plus the challenge of the  100 deg or better temps.

Then this weekend the only one words to describe it is FREAKING AWESOME. The other guy in town and I get together to run with every now and again got together for a another town run we call it. We have this thing to run to the towns around us and back. Where we have made now 4 of them with one of them a 20 out and back. Where I said it would be nice to run to that town and back one day then we looked up and there was the sign. The second was just shy of a marathon but with the hills and the 2 mile steady climb of a hill coming back I think it should count. The third is about the same length or more with not as big of hills but is a real mind game. Now the  fourth one was a complete marathon it had the hills out in the open and a pavement run to.

Now this I was dreading no bathroom spots all open highway running. But all that before must be dang paying off. It was an awesome morning with little wind and unbelievably cool and only to get to 80 by noon. Going out was great we were not having any problems except for trying to water some of the prairie here and there as the highway was busier that we thought it would be for Saturday. On the way back though we seen the time and realized we were running against the clock. Running against it for what you might think, a 4 yes I said 4 hour marathon I couldn’t believe it we even stopped at a gas station out in nowhere land. Well we did make it though right at 4 hours on the nose. One of the best runs I have had in a long time almost having to say it equaled my retirement from running 6 miler that was one of the freest runs I have ever had.

When I first when I started this running I wanted to be able to do that and run a marathon  having it in the books with me being good with that and being done. The thing that makes me give just that ornery grin is that I  know now it will never happen as have never run one and never will.

OK well unless it is the “Free State” trail marathon. There’s a challenge

This should be when life gets in the way and when your just being an ass should be the title.

7/8 — 7-10 Sunday ran 10 miles and 10 stops of 20 push-ups and an 30 sit-ups in 1st 2 miles

Then who knows I know there were 5 times altogether above 100 deg and 1-16 miler 2-12’s and 2-10’s past that I really do not know. The life thing, stubbornness and being an ass are my 3 problems. As I am tired of the wife using my running is more important than….. and another issue which really does not prevent me from going out and run per say. Though each time that is brought up or the other issue costs a day of running even when she says I need and better get out and run. My excuse is my back and hind section hurt and is to tight to go and I would pull something then. Until I get off the couch or the chair at my desk it will not happen as I say that it is the cause. Race day waits for no one and I still like a good challenge as I did a 50 mile ultra on 4 ½ weeks of training last year (race report coming).

Common Sense

And since the last 2 weeks have been pretty much a bust in running. You can count on one hand the times I’ve been out though on the highest temp days 100 deg and above and miles of 10 to 16 miles. I still haven’t found the one thing to get me motivated for my 50 mile ultra in October after I accomplished it at last years 100.  So I found this below and thought a lot of people think ultra runners have lost common sense.

“A country that gives up it FREEDOMS FOR SAFETY has neither!!” –T. Jefferson

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:-Knowing when to come in out of the rain; – Why the early bird gets the worm;- Life isn’t always fair; – And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don’t spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights,I Want It Now,Someone Else Is To Blame,I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
